I just "surfaced" it with some sandpaper on glass. It's been four years since I did mine so I'm working off of memory here, but with my pump the rest of the casting was like new; for some reason the rotor didn't wear into the main casting as it did to the cover. The clearances are pretty much defined by how deep pocket for the rotor is machinined into the casting, so since I couldn't detect any wear, I didn't worry about it... I don't remember the exact clearance, but it wasn't much at all.
